An area bathed in southern charm and rich with history. Beaufort and Down East have been drawing in settlers for centuries with ample fishing and wildlife, warm coastal plains and serene nature. Beaufort is the third oldest town in the state and was one of the earliest ports along the Eastern Seaboard. Once frequented by the infamous pirate Edward Teach (Blackbeard) for its ease of access to open waters and secluded tidal creeks, the area has had its fair share of enthusiasts for aeons. Now home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum, Beaufort Historical Society and several Art Galleries, the area is ripe with culture and knowledge. Artisan shops and restaurants reside in meticulously maintained historic buildings lining the streets of downtown Beaufort and seamlessly blend with other privately owned residences. The boardwalk is a vision decorated with a nearly limitless supply of bright foliage, and just beyond the wooden railings the sea glistens with boats of all shapes and sizes. The Beaufort and Down East areas are also home to Cape Lookout National Seashore which can easily be accessed by private vessels and both passenger and vehicle ferries. The active area ferry system in Beaufort, Ocracoke and Harkers Island grant access to cherished coastal islands like Shackleford Banks, Rachel Carson Coastal Reserve and Cape Lookout. The uninhabited barrier islands are ideal for surf fishing, beachcombing and observation of unique wildlife such as Shackleford Ponies.
